SS Norway Boiler Rupture
Abstract:
In May 2003 a steam-driven cruise ship SS Norway
experienced a rupture of one of its main boilers in the port of Miami resulting
in 8 fatalities and over 20 million dollars in damage. The presentation
focuses on the metallurgical evaluation of boiler sections, but also discusses
data from operational history, maintenance, water chemistry, significant
historical events, and inspection practices by the operator and regulatory
agencies.
Biography
Mr. Rossey is
currently working at GE Aviation in the Failure Investigations division.
He was raised in Italy
for 16 years (Aviano AFB), went to Italian schools up to high school before
moving to Sarasota, FL.
He received his BS
University of Florida- Material Science and Engineering (MSE). While at the University of Florida he
interned at Pratt and Whitney and the National Transportation Safety Board
(NTSB).
Between 1997 and 2002
he was at General Electric Aviation where his duties included Structural
Materials Development, Failure Analysis, and Repair Engineering. In 2000, while at GE he received his MS in
MSE from the University of CIncinnati
Between 2002 and 2005
he again at NTSB working on failure analysis in the Materials Laboratory
Since 2005 he has been
at GE Aviation.
He founded and runs
the UC Turbocats - Engine Restoration team of University of Cincinnati gas
turbine club
He lives with his wife
and two kids in Cincinnati.
