Advanced Materials and
Manufacturing for the US Air Force
Dr. Kathy Stevens
Director, Materials &
Manufacturing Directorate
Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson
AFB, OH.
ABSTRACT
The needs of the United States Air
Force demand continuous advances in technology. The Materials & Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force
Research Laboratory is the only organization charged with the development of
materials & manufacturing science & technology for current & future
Air Force weapon systems. Working
internally and with industry, universities, and other Government organizations,
its achievements have enabled increases in component and system performance,
availability, and quality, and decreases in the costs of acquisition and
sustainment. Highlighted in this talk
are advancements in metallic materials, including material development,
processing/ manufacturing, behavior/life prediction, and the compelling case
for needed changes in the way materials are developed, through the introduction
of integrated materials science and engineering.
